Can I have a food energy and water education please ? U start with food A University of Food project by Mario Molinari ABSTRACT The booklet is a reflection on the ‘often overlooked dimension [of food] to our understanding of the Second World War’ (Lizzie Collingham, A Taste of War). Today, uncertainties over the entire food supply are a cause of tension, conflict and wars. Any reference to ‘food security’ shows that countries are unwilling or even opposed to put food centre stage and make it a rightful instrument of policy. Peace or political activists and campaigners have largely ignored this food dimension. A different style of campaigning is called for. No aspect of living is left untouched by food and U Start with Food tells part of the story. Food Dimension focuses on a de facto warfare economy as seen through the lenses of food and jobs. The idea to institute a virtual University of Food is mooted as an alternative to war. A second part looks at the beautiful ‘language of food’ first in one of its illustrations (Figure 2) and then specifically in Food Birthing. That food is born, hence ‘food birthing’, may be a novel way of looking at food. This section explores the ‘birth’ of food seen as an enduring metaphor for renewal. Under Food Links the interplay between food, families, communities, the economy, and learning is further explored. http://ustartwithfood.com/wp-content/uploads/start-food.pdf Biography Mario Molinari is a food writer and tutor with a background in navigation and business. He believes that our attitude towards food must change if we want to raise hopes for a better today. Food, water, energy and, indeed, all life essentials should be part of our upbringing (family structures) and education (social structures). He invites participation in the setting up of community gardens and of a virtual University of Food. He is the author of Divided by Words a book that highlights the pitfalls of the way we communicate. We cannot go past words and fail to match good intentions with useful action. His affiliations are with permaculture and a small number of other groups. He has tried a number of things but these things have a habit of not quite getting off the ground. For him, what would work is a shared belief in our commitment to a joyful and compassionate living. I hope 'U start with food' will serve as eyonener for the underlying problems we face in our world, with our daily food as example for all. Great work Mario !
