from Tom Van Sant, October 4th 2012The purpose of The GeoSphere Project is to make complex global systems understandable. Through the use of technology, we are creating visualizations that illustrate and enhance our understanding of Earth processes.
The GeoSphere Globe is the most advanced three-dimensional electronic global information display system. It is six feet and four inches in diameter and utilizes advanced computer technology to control rotation, lighting, and projection. It features as its surface The Earth From Space (known also as the GeoSphere Image), the cloud-free satellite composite view of Earth in full-color and full resolution. This image is printed onto the translucent surface of the clear acrylic sphere, allowing illuminated visualization to be projected from within. As seen by the viewer, the globe comes alive with animated visualizations of selected complex global systems and resource databases. The base and mounting allow for polar vertical positioning as well as the 23 1/2 degree tilt representing the Earth's relationship to the sun.
The GeoSphere Project in currently developing interior and exterior projection, fiber optics and variable light sources to deliver to the globe surface the many visualizations of the Global Visual Library as well as live seismic activity, near-real-time weather, ocean and atmospheric conditions, global trade and traffic, military activity and the many issues of public policy and topical news.
Seeing the problem is one thing, but understanding the problem and action upon that understanding is another ! However I am grateful to Tom van Sant and others to visualize the issues at hand - the first step of the solving process. Let us hope it is the right one, still in time !
